Most of medieval literature is poetry. A popular genre was that of romances, generally translated from the French models. They’re stories in verse about chivalry, love and magic (like fairies, giants, dragons and wizards). These stories came from three main sources: France (about Charlemagne), Rome (about classical stories, such as the conquest of Troy) and Britain (the story of King Arthur).
From medieval poetry derived the popular ballads. They were wrote anonymously and could be accompanied or not with dance. They were transmitted orally and written between the 13th and 14th centuries. They were collected only in the 1765 in the “Reliques of Ancient English Poetry” by Bishop Thomas Percy. The narrative technique of ballads is similar to that of montage in film. It is not a continuous sequence of events, but a series of rapid flashes. Popular ballads are composed both of dialogue and narration. The stanzas of a ballad are usually composed of four lines and the rhyme scheme is: ABCB. But sometimes they’re couplets(two lines) with an alternating refrain(repetition). The language of the ballads is simple and it has a lot of formulaic phrases. Ballads are peopled with magic animals which could speak, fairies, witches and ghosts.
Ballads are classified to the following themes:
– Ballads of magic: about magic (fairies, ghosts ecc…);
– Border Ballads: about the rivalry between the English and the Scottish;
– Ballads of love and domestic tragedy;
– Ballads of outlaws: about the cycle of Robin Hood.

Today I met a Troubadours.
Troubadours and trouvères are names that indicate medieval poets and musicians.
I’ve been listening to him and I’ve found something, through his poetry song, a bit strange.
The loving feeling of the knight towards his lady was concretely defined as a “service” of feudal nature, a relationship between “lady” and “vassal”, which through a series of levels sublimated the luxurious eros in the mystical vision of the woman. The highest point, that is, the loving acme, was generally represented by a chaste kiss. The perfect lover, in intimacy as in society, was merely a servant of his lady; his duty was to please her, to be faithful, to decant her virtues. In return, the lady, her lady, had to let her know her behavior.
Said this, it does not matter that my brother obstinately wants to become a knight, he does not have a vassal character for sure, I think he will remain single for a long time yet….
